Science Roadshow

This week some students went and visited the Science Roadshow. The Science Roadshow was lots of fun, the children got to trial a whole range of different experiments as well as try to figure out the reasons why certain things worked the way they do.
Paige and Michelle trying to figure out how this experiment with rotational gravity worked.

Jasraj and Aomi

Codi and Ethyn

Even the teachers learnt lots too.

 Codey, Aomi and Jasraj

And we sat down to learn about some different topics, such as how muscles work.

Aomi even won a pen with a caliper attached, which is used to measure the distance between two sides of an object.

Reminder: Science Fair projects should be coming together now, they are due next Friday.

Parent - Teacher -Student Conferences

Notices have gone home to all students, the conferences are coming up next week. Please return notices as soon as possible in order to book an appointment.

It would be fantastic to meet with you and discuss your child's learning.

Science Fair

Science Fair Projects should be underway at home. This year the science fair projects can be around a topic that interests the creator. At the beginning of this term students took home a timeline to follow to finish their Science Fair Projects, their finished projects are due on the 20th of June.

At school we have been through the process of completing a mini science fair, as well as discussion around what makes a good science fair. The students have information on the science fair process in their school diaries as well to help them.

Here are some sites that we have looked at in class and might be helpful at home as well:

This website has some ideas of science fair topics that can be done - http://www.sciencefair-projects.org/index.html

A moment of life and death

Oh no, Jack had a crash! On his bicycle a couple of days ago. Jack is in his 40s and still cycles to work and home 3 days a week a round trip of 28km.

Jack was a semi-professional rugby league player until he was 35 years old, he still trains regularly. Therefore he has a body that has taken much physical abuse over the years but he is quick, fit and strong.

Jack was cycling on a cycle path going downhill and banking to the right at about 50km/h. Jack drifted a little wide on the riding line, and the bike went out from underneath and came into contact with some leaf litter and other rubbish on the cycle path and the bike turned me quickly.

Jack lost most of memory of the crash with the force when his head hit the path. Luckily the cushioning effect the helmet provided meant it was like falling into a pillow.

Jack suffered the usual scrapes to Jack lower leg, upper leg, hip, arm and also the shoulder as well as some trauma to Jacks right shoulder due to the force of it coming into contact with ground.

However if it were not for the helmet Jack has no doubt he would have died.

Jireh has written this story to help promote people to make the right choice and wear their helmets.

Food Tech 8/05/14

The Diet Water group were called to Food Tech to make a healthy alternative of a wrap plus some extremely delicious healthy banana muffins. There were in total 9 of us. We had our ingredients which were lettuce, coleslaw, onion, tomato, cheese, chicken, cucumber and a variety of sauces. We washed our hands and started grating the cheese, tossing the lettuce and coleslaw, chopping tomatoes, cucumber and onion. Some were sent to chop and cook the chicken, some were sent to make the muffins, and some were sent to do the wraps. The ERO (Education Review Office) Team were here and they got to try the wraps and muffins, which they said were delicious.

Muffins:
They were extremely good, delicious and warm. They turned out better than expected. We gave a muffin to each teacher in the school, and all came back saying they were delicious.

Wraps:
They were a mixture of tastes with the honey and mustard sauce plus the sweet and sour sauce. The wraps were both tasteful and good-looking. With a mixture of salads, and healthy 5+ a day ingredients.
